Recipe for a Wonderful Mother’s Day

What a nice day, thought I’d share the recipe!

Ingredients:
1 six year old
1 three year old
1 husband and parenting partner

1) Roll out of bed at 7am, last one up in the house (actually, that’s a pretty typical weekend occurance).

2) Open Mother’s Day presents… some very nice gardening stuff, but the homemade gifts are the best.  Ryan made me bath salts which he told me as he handed me the package, before I opened it.  He’s been trying to tell me for days now and I’ve been trying not to hear, but he finally blurted it out before I recognized the spoiler alert…. phew!  He was awfully relieved that he was able to tell me with only seconds left before I would have figured it out myself!  Nathan gave me a picture he colored with this note:
“The important thing about my mom is that she is kind.  She is lovable and she is pretty and happy and she likes music.  But the important thing about my mom is that she is kind.”
His note was wrapped up in homemade wrapping paper, on which he drew a volcano with lava spewing out in the shape of a heart.  Isn’t that just straight from the brain of a boy… what could say, “I love my mom” more than a heart-shaped volcanic eruption?

3) Run a one mile race with Nathan.  He got a medal and cookies at the end and the moms got flowers.  This week is the first time I have run with Nathan, and it is a fantastic experience.  He talks to me about all kinds of stuff without any of his sarcastic 6-going-on-13-year-old sassiness.  We both had fun and Nathan ran a 12 minute mile, which I think is pretty good for a 6 year old.

4) Meanwhile, back at home, Ryan and Michael were busy whipping up a fantastic Mother’s Day brunch.  It’s quite the treat when my house smells like bacon!! Yum!!!

5)  We had beautiful weather all day and family over for dinner.

6) And finally topped off the day with a boy who is usually a little difficult to put to bed, falling asleep on the couch.  An afternoon of playing hard outside with cousins will do that to you!

Thank you to all the women in my life that have helped me become the mom I am today.  Regardless of if you have a whole gaggle of little rugrats or none at all you have all helped shape me into the mom I am and so this day belongs to you, too!!  Happy Mother’s Day!

At The Hill

Nathan played in a very large Suzuki concert at The Hill Auditorium at U of M tonight. While my first thought about this concert was, “Really?  He’s six.  He thinks it’s cool to play on the stage in a high school auditorium. Do we really need to play The Hill?  How do we go up from there??!!” But, alas, why else was this huge performance hall put here than to allow a bunch of children to make music together?  So, I squelched my hesitation and went with it.  And, I’ve got to admit, this is pretty neat…It’s also great to sit in this beautiful, old hall and see all these children dressed in their best and one small boy up front yell to the audience before each song, “I don’t really know this song!”, and another little girl, almost completely hidden behind her pint-sized cello just digging away for treasure in her nose.  And, yes, I do understand that I only enjoyed those children because they were not my child.  Somewhere there were some mortified parents sitting in the audience… I feel for them!

And for his encore, Nathan completely devoured a Ben and Jerry’s Chocolate Fudge Brownie ice cream in a chocolate dipped cone with sprinkles!  Bravo!!

Newest Yankee Candle Scent

Ryan: Something smells really good.

Mama: Really?  I don’t smell anything.  (I really don’t.)

Ryan: Yeah, it smells good, like…. butter in a pan.

Mama: Huh….

Ryan: Yeah… and like cheese in the freezer.

Look who can write his name…

Ryan is such a stubborn learner. Unlike Nathan, with whom we had to have “Why Breaks” (“Nathan, I am very pleased that you are so curious about everything, but for Mama’s mental health we are going to have 10 minutes with no questions. Thank you for your understanding.”) Ryan is just satisfied that things are the way they are and that’s just fine with him. If he catches on that you are trying to teach him something, his eyes get squinty, his brows furrow, his lips close tightly and he walks away from you. I sent him off to preschool not knowing how to count to 10, say the ABCs or recognize any of the letters in his name, all skills that Nathan had mastered at that age. I’m happy to say that Ryan does love school and, for some mysterious reason, it is not so offensive to him to be taught by his teachers. He now has all of the above skills mastered and surprised me this week by writing his name. No “why” questions yet, but at least he’s opening up to the idea of learning!

Spring Break

Well everyone is back to school now, but here is a quick recap of Spring Break 2012.

Nathan and Ryan headed out for a sleepover with cousins right after Nathan’s violin recital.  They had fun playing together, eating at the Rain Forest Cafe and visiting the Detroit Zoo.Then all of the kids came to our house for a sleepover and they had more fun playing, going to the World of Discovery Reptile Zoo in Ann Arbor and having a picnic lunch at a park. Then there was a Chuck E Cheese day with grandparents…. then the grand finale of spring break week…. Easter!Ryan didn’t really care about his basket.  He just wanted to eat candy!Trying to get a good picture of two sugar-filled, excited boys all dressed up for Easter is quite a feat! There was an egg hunt in Great Grandma and Great Grandpa’s garden. Here are a majority of their great grandchildren (missing Paityn, Jahmal, Xavier, Kobe and Riley) with one grandchild (can you pick out who??).And here is my adorable neice wearing the dress I made… I’m honored that it made “Easter Sunday” status!Another egg hunt at Aunt Debbie’s house (only missing great grandchildren were Kobe and Riley!) and a special visitor! And then the boys returned to school and Michael had his spring break.  He didn’t have nearly the excitement as the boys did, but he did work hard to make me a new veggie garden.  Hopefully, I can be the gardener that I have been dreaming of… and hopefully, future pictures of this spot will have a lot more green in it!
